Growing up the oldest of four boys, Rigel’s dad worked as an engineer, teaching Rigel to be curious, ask questions, and be interested in fixing broken things. His mom was a full-time parent and showed him the meaning of public service as she sought to create a more welcoming environment for other immigrant families at his schools.
As a student leader at UC Berkeley, Rigel led student efforts to support the development of more affordable student housing near campus, divest the University of California from fossil fuels, and secure additional state funding for the UC. Thanks to the successful joint advocacy between the statewide student association and the university, the UC saw its first tuition decrease in 20 years.
In 2018, Rigel became the youngest Berkeley City Councilmember ever elected in the city’s history.
Now, Rigel Robinson is proud to be serving his second term on the Berkeley City Council, where he has been fighting for a more affordable, sustainable, and safe future for Berkeley.
There are common sense solutions to our problems, but too many entrenched interests standing in the way. That’s why I’m running for Mayor: to end the closed-minded mentality that says no to progress and get our city working again!
